Bezeq gears up for 4G

Bezeq has selected Juniper Networks to establish a new IP

network.

Bezeq Israeli Telecommunication Co. Ltd. (TASE: BEZQ) is undertaking a major upgrade for its mobile carrier subsidiary Pelephone Communications Ltd. to offer fourth generation mobile communications (4G). Sources inform ”Globes” that Juniper Networks Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR) has won Bezeq’s tender to establish a new IP network that Pelephone will use for 4G, and for other carriers interested in the new services that the network will offer. Alcatel-Lucent SA (Euronext; NYSE: ALU) and Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO) also bid in the tender. The new network that Bezeq will build will gradually become a designated mobile network and will function as a third network alongside the designated networks for the Internet and business Internet. The new network will allow Pelephone to independently manage data communications over its network, which until now was handled by the infrastructure company.

This will give Pelephone independence and flexibility in managing network resources, a critical matter for 4G networks because of the increase in data communications and the need to allow the use of many applications at higher speeds.

A recent example was the need of mobile carriers around the world to prepare for the Apple Ios-7 operating system upgrade, when it was decided that it should only be carried out via Wi-Fi, rather than via mobile networks, due to concerns that they would collapse under the load. With 4G, networks will presumably be able to handle such events.
