Pelephone, union agree to 500 dismissals
And the union got management to sweeten the terms of remaining workers.
Management at cellular company Pelephone has reached an agreement with the union for 400 to 500 of the company’s 3,000 workers to be dismissed, sources told TheMarker.
This comes a year after the company recoginzed the workers’ union.
Negotiations are underway to hash out a collective wage agreement.
Another 150 workers will be laid off over the next three years. However, the union got management to agree to improve the terms of the workers who are remaining.
The full scale of layoffs will become known only once the wage agreement is finalized.
Union chairman Barak Levy and Pelephone stated in response that the negotiations were still underway.
In 2012, the court ruled in a precedent-setting decision that an employer − namely, Pelephone − could not interfere in the unionization process, paving the way for the company to recognize the union and launch negotiations on a collective wage agreement.
In order to pressure management over the past few days, Pelephone employees undermined operations primarily in the company’s cell phone sales and repairs departments.
Employees are unionized under the Histadrut labor federation.
